GENERAL PEARL INFORMATION:

FRESHWATER PEARLS. These pearls are cultivated in oysters from freshwater lakes and rivers. Most of these are harvested in China and the Biwa lakes of Japan. Freshwater Pearls are also produced in the USA. These pearls usually vary from 2mm to 9mm in size and exhibit an endless variety of shapes and colours.

AKOYA PEARLS. These are also known as Seawater Pearls and they are cultivated in the Akoya oysters that are found off the southern and western coastal areas of Japan. Akoyal Pearls are the most widely available cultured pearls in the world today, and therefore, the most commonly used pearls in jewellery. These pearls range in size from 2mm to 9mm. Very rarely do they grow beyond 9mm.

SOUTH SEA PEARLS. Also variably referred to as the "Queen of Pearls" or the "Pearl of Queens", South Sea pearls range in size from 9mm to 16mm and sometimes larger than that. These magnificant pearls are the most sought after cultured pearls in the world for their dazzling beauty and phenomenal size. Australia produces the finest quality of white and silverish pearls of this kind. The French Polynesian islands of Tahiti produce peacock green, blue, grey and aubergine black pearls of this type.

BAROQUE PEARLS. These pearls are usually drop shaped. Though they are quite economically priced, baroque pearls can sometimes be exquisitely beautiful.

KESHI PEARLS. These much-sought after pearls are not only attractive, they are expensive too. Keshi pearls are generally very small and are rarely more than 10mm in size.

MABE PEARLS. These pearls are hemispherical in shape, which is the reason they are also known as half pearls. They grow adjacent to the inside of oyster shells and can be cultivated in a variety of shapes - ovals, drops, rounds and hearts. Some large Mabe pearls can even be 22mm in size, yet despite their impressive sizes they are relatively inexpensive.

COLOUR. The choice of colour of the pearls you wish to buy is a purely personal preference. The reason why pink or silvery-pink pearls are priced higher than most other colours is that people generally prefer to buy these colours.

SIZE. The larger pearls are more expensive simply because they are very RARE. It is not uncommon to find large pearls to be imitation pearls on closer inspection. It is therefore far more important to ensure that you buy genuine pearls even if you have to compromise on the size of the pearls.

SHAPE. The FINEST pearls are perfectly ROUND ones and they are more expensive, too. Other favoured shapes include the oval and the pear.

LUSTRE. One of the most important criteria that has to be taken into consideration while evaluating a pearl is its lustre. Indeed it is one factor that plays a great deal of importance in determining the price of the pearl. Lustre is the SHINE or GLOW on the surface of the pearl. The DEEPER the lustre of the pearl, the better the pearl and the more valuable it is. That is why it is extremely important to make sure that the lustre of the pearl you select is just what you are looking for.
